looking after your metalware
After care
We strive to produce metalware of the finest craftsmanship and quality. All our pieces are designed to be used so to ensure that your purchase is enjoyed for years to come, here are some helpful tips.
STERLING SILVER
We specialise in the design and manufacture of sterling silver. All sterling silver pieces are assessed and hallmarked by the Edinburgh Assay Office to guarantee its finesse and purity.

Tarnishing is a natural process that will occur over time. To prevent, store silver in a tarnish proof bag and occasionally clean with either an impregnated polishing cloth or dip in a propriety silver cleaner. Frosted or matt finish silver should not be cleaned by hand but dipped in silver cleaner and then rinsed well before buffing with a dry cloth.
SILVER PLATE
The majority of our Silver Plated products are cast in heavily weighted brass which is plated in 26 microns of sterling silver.
Silver Plate can be treated like Sterling Silver; clean with silver polish or dip and lightly buff. Silver figurines on boards can be cleaned with a bristle brush then rinsed and any excess wiped from the wood.
GOLD-PLATE
Similar in appearance to pure Gold but significantly more affordable, all our Gold Plated pieces are made using 24ct gold.
It is natural for Gold Plate to fade over time, to prevent only polish occasionally with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Do not use a polishing agent as this will wear away the layer of Gold.

WOOD
We use a variety of sustainably sourced wood from Scotland and abroad. Including; Beech, Oak, Yew and Rhodesian Teak, each selected for its unique character and durability.
To keep its appearance wood will benefit from the regular application of oil; Beeswax, Linseed even Mineral Oils work well.
LEATHER & SKINS
All our animal products are handmade to order by local craftspeople in Scotland.
We currently offer two different kinds of leather for our shooting wallets: Chromexcel Leather, a hard-wearing yet supple leather made from either horse fronts or sides and dyed with aniline to give it a subtly distressed appearance. Or, Essex Leather, which is a vegetable tanned side leather that is hand dyed to achieve the ochre hues.
A variety of animal skins are available with our Sterling Silver Sporrans, including mink, musquash and rabbit. Get in touch for further detail: info@haywardandstott.com
