The history of the Armada Plate:
Armada Plates are also known as a Drake or Elizabethan plates. This unique design goes back five hundred years. Sir Christopher Harris, a sixteenth-century commander of a British Army Regiment, was gifted a silver banquet service. This was found on-board the sunken ships of the Spanish Armada. Around 1645 Sir Christopher’s great-nephew, a Royalist Commander based in Plymouth, buried the service in a field near Dartmoor to prevent it falling into Parliamentarian hands. This service was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and sold by Christie’s in 1911. The design was thereafter copied, including the characteristic raised centre boss of the plate and its broad rim
Peter Lyster-Todd –
Thrilled with the actual Armada dish itself and thrilled with the personal way in which my order was first handled and thereafter implemented at a very busy time of the year ( Christmas ) in respect of sending it safely to me.
